Everyone feels deep sadness from time to time – in response to a death in the family, for example, or an inexplicable tragedy, or losing a job. This is a common and normal reaction to a life situation, and is called reactive depression. With the passage of time, the depression lifts, the mood lightens, and life goes on. Clinical depression, on the other hand, is a persistent depression that is out of proportion to a person’s life situation or, in many cases, occurs for no apparent reason.

A person who is depressed is under enormous stress. He or she may experience extreme feelings of sadness, dejection, despair, worthlessness, hopelessness, and emptiness. Early signs of depression include a lack of motivation and an inability to concentrate. A person who is entering a depressed state may exhibit mood swings and may even have crying fits for no obvious reason. If the episode continues, symptoms can include loss of appetite, erratic sleeping patterns, and a complete loss of interest in normal daily activities, even ones that were previously a source of great pleasure. A seriously depressed person may become completely withdrawn from life and eventually may even refuse – or become unable – to get out of bed. Severely depressed people often have feelings of complete worthlessness and / or guilt over some imagined situation. Thoughts of death and suicide may be uppermost in their minds.

Depression is the most common of the serious psychiatric illnesses. An estimated 10 to 15 percent of all people suffer an episode of depression at some point of time in their lives. Most often, it is relatively mild and short-lived. More women than men are diagnosed with depression. About 1 in 6 women will seek help for depression, whilst only 1 in 9 men will do so. However this disparity may reflect the fact that, in general, women are more willing than men to admit to feelings of hopelessness and depression.

The incidence of depression increases with age. This may be because older people living on their own may be socially isolated and often worry over becoming a burden to their families. In addition, they have often lost many friends and loved ones to death, and may require multiple medications and different medical conditions (many medications can affect mood). Add to this increasing physical frailty and slowing mental faculties, and the scene is set for a depressive episode.

There is no single cause of depression. Many cases appear to be linked to abnormalities in brain chemistry. For example, it has been determined that persons at high risk of suicide have lower than normal levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that controls inhibitions and is closely related to mood. People with reduced levels serotonin are there more likely to act on feelings such as a desire to take their own life. Conversely, increasing the level of serotonin in the brain improves mood in many cases.

Some cases of depression can be traced inadequate nutrition. Deficiencies of certain vitamins, for example, can result in symptoms of mental and emotional disorders. Food allergies can also result in a depressed state. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can cause mood swings, irrational behavior, and may set the scene for episodes of depression. One type of depression, known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), appears to be related to insufficient exposure to sunlight. When days are short and skies are gray and overcast, exposure to sunlight is reduced or non-existent. This causes the retina of the eye to fail to send proper messages to the hypothalamus, which is responsible for transmitting signals that maintain the body in its properly regulated state. The end result may be a form of depression. SAD most often affects those living in northern climes during the cold months of the year.

Postpartum depression (PPD, also called the baby blues), is a type of depression that many women experience after the birth of a child. It is caused by an imbalance in hormones that often occurs after delivery. This situation is usually short-lived, new mothers tend to regain their equilibrium as their hormones stabilize. Holiday depression is a common phenomenon suffered by many people. Many people who tend to feel blue during special seasons of the year feel pressured to make everything “perfect”, and when they cannot, they end up feeling sad and depressed.

Some women who take oral contraceptives, which affect the body’s hormonal balance, fall into a depressed state without knowing why. Over time, hormone deficiencies and imbalances can lead to some form of depression. A dysfunctional thyroid gland is also a possible source of trouble, as is heavy metal poisoning. Virtually any chronic illness can be accompanied by depression as well.

Manic-depressive disorder (medically termed bipolar mood disorder) is a variant of depression in which periods of deep depression alternate with periods of irrational elation and hyperactivity.

Dietary Guidelines for Managing Depression

Follow a healthy diet plan that provides a good balance of all the important nutrients and an adequate amount of fiber. Be sure to include clean, lean protein foods such as fish, chicken, tofu and plenty of fresh vegetables, especially greens.

It is important to keep your blood sugar levels in balance. Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day rather than 3 large ones, and eat healthy snacks when you feel hungry.

Include in your diet low-fat dairy products, bananas, soy based foods, and turkey. These foods are natural sources of tryptophan, which is necessary for the formation of serotonin.

Avoid the artificial stimulation produced by alcohol and caffeine. While both of these substances are stimulating initially, the stimulation is ultimately followed by a depressed state.

Nutritional Supplements for Managing Depression

Many depressed people, including those who are just “on edge”, neglect themselves and eat poorly. Take a good multivitamin and mineral formula daily to make sure your body has all the basic nutrients it requires.

Calcium and magnesium are essential to the central nervous system. They work best when taken together. Take a calcium and magnesium combination formula that supplies 500 milligrams of calcium and 250 to 500 milligrams of magnesium twice daily.

Chromium helps keep blood sugar levels in balance. Take 200 micrograms of chromium twice a day for 1 month, then reduce to 200 micrograms daily.

DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) can be very helpful for a short period of time, if taken correctly. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams twice a day, between meals, with water or juice only. Do not take it with protein foods. Take it for up to 3 weeks.

Levels of folic acid are often significantly lower than normal in people who are depressed. Take 800 micrograms of folic acid once daily. If you take any of the B vitamins individually, you should take a B-complex supplement at a different time of the day.

Inositol is a B vitamin required for the activity of several important neurotransmitters, including serotonin. Levels of inositol are often low in depressed people. In one study, subjects given 1 gram of inositol per day had therapeutic results similar to common antidepressant drugs, but with no unwanted side effects. The same results were confirmed in additional studies. Further, traditional Chinese medicine teaches that stagnation of the liver contributes to many problems, including depression. Inositol promotes the export of fat from the liver, thus helping relieve stagnation of this important organ. Take 500 milligrams of inositol 3 times daily for one week. If you note no improvement after that time, discontinue use; otherwise, continue taking 500 milligrams 3 times daily as needed. This dosage of inositol should be used under the supervision of a physician.

Melatonin may be helpful for some cases of seasonal affective disorder. Some experts believe the body’s melatonin mechanism is involved in this form of depression. Melatonin can also be helpful if you are having problems with insomnia. Take 3 milligrams each evening, between one-half hour and 2 hours before retiring for the night.

An excellent supplement for depression is s-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM or SAM-e). This amino-acid derivative has been compared to prescription medication, but without the side effects. Initial recommended doses are in the range of 400 to 500 milligrams 3 times daily, followed by a maintenance dose of 400 milligrams a day. Unfortunately SAM is not easy to obtain, and it is expensive. Research has found that trimethylglycine (TMG), which is less expensive, is converted into SAM in the body. The initial recommended dose of TMG is 3,000 milligrams a day, followed by a maintenance dose of 1,000 milligrams a day for up to 3 weeks.

Tyrosine is an important amino acid that stimulates the production of norepinephrine, a hormone that is essential to the central nervous system. This nutrient is especially important for the depressed individual who is feeling excessive fatigue. Take 250 to 500 milligrams twice a day for up to 3 weeks.

Note: If you are taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor drug, do NOT take supplemental tyrosine, as a dangerous elevation in blood pressure may result.

A deficiency of Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) usually accompanies depression. Take 50 milligrams of Vitamin B6 twice a day for 2 weeks, between meals. Then take 50 milligrams once daily for 3 weeks, between meals. Thereafter, take a good B-complex formula or a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement to maintain healthy levels of this vitamin.

Vitamin B12 can help to increase energy and improve mood. Take 300 to 500 micrograms of Vitamin B12 twice a day. If you take any of the B vitamins individually, you should also take a B-complex supplement at a different time of the day.

Herbal Treatments for Managing Depression

Bupleurum and Dong Quai make up a Chinese herbal formula that helps reduce anxiety, irritability, and depression. Take 1,000 milligrams of a bupleurum and Dong Quai combination formula 2 or 3 times daily for 2 weeks out of every month (if you are a woman, take it for the 2 weeks prior to the anticipated onset of your menstrual period).

Ginkgo Biloba increases the flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and can significantly reduce the symptoms of depression. Ginkgo Biloba must be taken for at least 3 months before you can assess its effectiveness. Choose a product containing at least 24 percent ginkgo heterosides (sometimes called flavoglycosides) and take 40 to 60 milligrams 2 or 3 times a day. Ginkgo Biloba is an especially important supplement if you are over 50 years of age.

Kava kava eases mental anguish and anxiety. Choose a product containing 30 percent kavalactones and take 150 milligrams 3 times daily.

Note: In excess amounts, Kava kava can cause drowsiness. Do NOT exceed the recommended dose. Do NOT use Kava kava if you are pregnant or nursing, if you have Parkinson’s disease, or if you are taking a prescription medication for depression or anxiety.

Oat straw is high in silica, which helps support and strengthen the central nervous system. Take 500 milligrams twice a day.

St John’s wort gently alters brain chemistry in such a way to improve mood and ease depression. Start by taking one 300 milligram capsule of standardized St John’s wort extract containing 0.3 percent hypericin daily. At 2 week intervals, you can add another 300 milligram capsule, taken at a different time of day (up to a total of 3 to 4 capsules a day), until you achieve the desired effect.

Siberian ginseng improves the balance of important neurotransmitters (including serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine) in the brain. Select a Siberian ginseng extract standardized to contain 0.5 percent eleutheroside E and take 100 milligrams first thing in the morning and again before lunch.

If sleeplessness is a problem, take 200 to 300 milligrams of standardized Valerian extract containing 0.5 percent iso-valerenic acids one hour before bedtime and another 200 to 300 milligrams just before going to bed. Do not use Valerian on an ongoing basis, but take a week off every 4 to 6 weeks.

Aromatherapy Treatments for Managing Depression

Many essential oils can lift the spirits. Some of the best known for this purpose include germanium, jasmine, lavender, neroli, rose, and ylang. Use any or all of them as inhalants of in aromatherapy baths, diffuse them into the air, add them to massage oil, or use them in any way you choose.

General Recommendations for Managing Depression

See your doctor to rule out any underlying problems that could be causing a depressed state.

Be sure to exercise. Regular physical activity eases depression, reduces nervous tension and feelings of anxiety, and is an aid to restful sleep. Studies have shown that exercise is a fast-acting mood elevator that increases feelings of well being.

Insomnia often accompanies depression. If insomnia is a problem, try taking hot baths. Soaking in a tub of hot water (102F) 2 hours before going to bed can help you to fall asleep faster, sleep more soundly, and awaken more refreshed in the morning. You should allow 2 hours to pass between the hot bath and retiring, however, for this to be effective.

If possible, also make sure your hands and face get adequate exposure to sunlight, for at least 30 minutes a day.

Vegetables are an important source of vitamins, minerals and all other good stuff important to a healthy, natural lifestyle. Nutritionally speaking, though, some greens are better for you than others. Here we will compare the nutritional value of several different types of green vegetables.

Nutrition Content of Salad Greens

Most salad greens are a good source of Vitamin C, beta carotene (the precursor of Vitamin A), Iron, Calcium, Folic Acid and dietary fiber. Generally, darker green means more nutrition. For example, the dark green leaves of the romaine lettuce have up to 6 times the Vitamin C content and 5 to 10 times the beta carotene of an equal amount of iceberg lettuce. And Arugula, an even greener green, has about 4 times the Vitamin C and 3 times the beta carotene of romaine. Compare the nutritional value of ten popular salad greens:

Nutrition Content of Leafy Greens

Many other types of green plants, especially kale, collards, and dandelion greens, are rich in carotene, Vitamin C, flavonoids, and other substances that help protect against degenerative diseases. They are also a good source of fiber and many minerals, particularly Iron and Calcium.

Ounce for ounce, fresh collard greens, kale and mustard greens have about us much Calcium as whole milke, and dandelion and turnip greens actually have more. Such green leafy vegetables as turnip greens, collards, green and red Swiss chard, beet greens, kale, dandelion greens, mustard greens, broccoli raad, and sorrel should all be included in a healthy diet.

For example just 3.5 ounces of beet greens can supply more than the daily requirement of Vitamin A, 50 percent of the daily requirement of Vitamin C, and 15 percent of the daily requirement of Calcium. Consider the following figures:

Note that leafy greens lose much of their volume when cooked. For example, a pound of raw greens will yield only about 1/2 cup of cooked leafy greens. Recommended preparation methods include steaming, simmering, blanching, braising, and quick sauteing - in other words, almost anything except frying!

Vegetables with the most Nutrition Content

There are a number of “prize” vegetables that really stand out for the impressive nutrition they offer. Kale is one of them. A single 3.5 ounce serving of kale supplies nearly twice the recommended daily allowance of both Vitamin A and Vitamin C, as well as 50 percent of the RDA of Vitamin E, 15 to 20 percent of the RDA of Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Calcium, and Iron, and 10 percent of the RDA of Magnesium.

Other “prize” vegetables are all the members of the cabbage family, including red and green cabbage, savoy cabbage, bok choy and napa cabbage, broccoli, radishes, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

Pain is nature’s alarm system, a signal that something is hurt and needs to be attended to. Pain in the form of a headache can signal muscle tension. Other types of pain can alert you to a strained muscle (like back pain or neck pain), a broken bone, an infection, or an inflamed appendix.

Pain is a response that helps protect the body from harm. For example, it is the lightning fast transmission of a pain signal that causes you to snatch your hand away from a fire or hot stove. Even before the brain signals “danger” or the hurt fully registers consciously, the body knows what action to take. Similarly, if you have broken a bone, the pain will convince you to avoid moving it, which could worsen the injury.

Pain can also be a signal that something has gone wrong internally. It is a basic symptom of inflammation, and can be an important clue to many disorders. There are a variety of sensations that may be described as painful, including throbbing, stabbing and aching. Pain may be localized at the site of an injury, or “referred” to another part of the body. It may be acute and resolve after short time, or chronic, lasting for 6 months or more. Pain can also be anywhere from mild to severe in intensity.

Both the physical and emotional aspects of pain need to be addressed and respected. The physical component of pain is relatively straightforward; it is the result of information being transmitted from the site of injury or illness to the brain. At the same time, however, another impulse runs through the central nervous system to another part of the brain, the limbic system. This system transmits the perception of pain and generates an emotional reaction to it. For example, when you stub a toe, you feel the immediate pain of the injury. But you also have an emotional reaction that may cause you to feel angry, afraid, sick to your stomach, or even sad. Because both physical and emotional aspects are involved when you are in pain, recognizing and dealing with your emotional response may be as important as anything else you can do.

The suggestions offered here are intended to help you deal with mild to moderate pain that may be related to an injury, acute illness, or recovery from surgery or a broken bone. If you experience pain that gets progressively worse, does not improve with ordinary pain control measures, interferes with your normal activity level, and / or starts in a small area and involves an increasingly large area, or if the pain is severe and unremitting, consult your doctor. Chronic pain (pain that lasts longer than 3 months) should be addressed by a health care professional.

Herbal Treatments for Pain Relief

Brew a pain-relief tea as follows: Simmer 1 tablespoon of White Willow bark in 1 quart of water for 15 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon of Valerian root and ½ tablespoon of Licorice root. Simmer for another 10 minutes; then strain and cool. For general pain relief, take 1 cup every hour for 4 consecutive hours. White Willow bark is an anti-inflammatory similar to aspirin; Chamomile is an effective relaxant; Skullcap and Valerian have sedative and antispasmodic properties; Licorice is an anti-inflammatory and enhances the action of the other herbs, in addition to sweetening the tea.

Note: Do NOT use Licorice on a daily basis for more than 5 days at a time, as it can elevate blood pressure. Do NOT use it at all if you have high blood pressure. Do NOT use White Willow bark if you are allergic to aspirin.

Capsaicin, a compound derived from Cayenne Pepper (capsicum) and available in cream or gel form, is especially good for pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis or shingles. Apply it as directed on the product label.

Curcumin, the compound in turmeric that gives Indian curry its color, has distinct anti-inflammatory abilities. Take 500 milligrams 3 times daily.

Kava kava is a relaxing herb that helps to ease pain. Choose a standardized Kava kava extract containing 30 per cent kava lactones and take 250 milligrams 3 times a day.

Pine Bark and Grape Seed extracts have anti-inflammatory properties. Take 50 to 100 milligrams of either 2 to 3 times daily.

Nutritional Supplements for Pain Relief

Bromelain is a natural enzyme that reduces inflammation. Take 300 to 500 milligrams 3 times daily, between meals.

Calcium and Magnesium can be effective for pain associated with muscle spasms. Take 500 milligrams of each 3 times daily. These minerals are best taken with Vitamin C to improve bioavailability.

Flax Seed Oil contains essential fatty acids that have an anti-inflammatory effect. Take 1 tablespoonful (or 500 to 1,000 milligrams in capsule form) twice a day.

Glucosamine sulfate is a safe and effective natural alternative to aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Glucosamine sulfate is especially helpful for arthritis pain. Take 500 milligrams 3 times daily. If you weigh over 200 pounds, take the same dose 4 times daily.

Pain, particularly low back pain, sometimes responds to high doses of Vitamin C. Take 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C and an equal amount of Bioflavonoids 3 times daily.

Dietary Guidelines for Pain Relief

Avoid foods containing saturated hydrogenated, and partially hydrogenated fats. In the body, these fats are transformed into a type of hormone like compound called a prostaglandin that promotes inflammation and pain. This means eliminating from your diet food such as butter, red meat, shellfish, margarine and shortenings (or anything that contains them), tropical oils such as coconut and palm oil, and ALL fried foods. Moderate amounts of baked, broiled, or poached fish and white-meat poultry, as well as low or non-fat dairy products such as yogurt, are acceptable.

Include fresh pineapple in your diet. Fresh pineapple is high in bromelain, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

Soups made with plenty of Garlic, onions, and green leafy vegetables, plus Burdock root, Ginger root, and turmeric root, are natural pain relievers with anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.

General Suggestions for Pain Relief

Try to relax. Learn how to manage stress. Stress, tension, and worry make pain worse. As much as possible, keep stressors such as noise, drafts, uncomfortable temperatures, glaring (or too dim) lighting, and emotions such as anger, anxiety, and fear to a minimum. A quiet room, soothing music, a warm bath, Reflexology or a gentle Massage can be helpful. Slow, Deep Breathing is also recommended. Yoga, Relaxation exercises and Guided imagery / visualization techniques are very helpful.

Explore the possibility of Acupuncture, Biofeedback, Chiropractic therapy and / or hypnotherapy. Certain types of pain can be managed very effectively with these approaches. Ask your health care provider for a referral to a qualified practitioner.

Practice distraction. Any kind of pleasant distraction – whether an engrossing book or movie, an addictive computer game, or a conversation with a good friend – can help take your attention away from discomfort.

Influenza – better known as “the Flu” – is a viral infection of the respiratory tract. It can occur in epidemic proportions during the winter. Because the structure of the flu virus may change every 2 or 3 years, the population will periodically be confronted with a flu virus it has never been exposed to before. This creates the possibility of an epidemic outbreak of influenza every 2 to 3 years. Between epidemics, smaller flu outbreaks may occur as people not exposed in the previous round are infected.

Flu Symptoms

The flu is very contagious and is spread by contact with an infected person. A person is contagious from about 2 days before symptoms occur until about the 5th day of the illness. Symptoms often develop suddenly, in a matter of hours, and include chills, fever, headache, chest discomfort, sore throat, cough, body-wide aches and pains, fatigue and weakness progressing to exhaustion and lack of appetite.

The acute illness generally runs its course in 3 to 4 days, but weakness and fatigue can persist for up to 3 weeks. Treatment is generally directed at alleviating symptoms, which can make you truly miserable. However if you begin experiencing signs of respiratory distress, such as rapid breathing, shortness of breath, a feeling of tightness in the chest, or wheezing, call your doctor. Pneumonia is a relatively common complication of influenza and it can become quite serious, especially in the young, the old, and those with compromised immune systems.

Also, if your symptoms do not start to improve within 3 days, or if new symptoms appear, you should consult your doctor. Other possible complications include bronchitis and even in some cases, seizures or encephalitis. These conditions require immediate medical attention.

Herbal Treatments for Flu

At the first sign of the flu, begin taking the Traditional Chinese Medicine botanical formula “Yin Qiao”. This remedy usually is not helpful after the 3rd day of symptoms. Take 2 or 3 tablets 3 times a day, up to 12 tablets in a 24 hour period, during the acute phase of the flu. After the symptoms start to ease, reduce the dosage to 1 tablet 3 times daily for 1 week.

To help yourself rest and relax, take a cup of chamomile tea twice a day.

Echinacea and Golden Seal stimulate the immune system. Golden Seal also helps to soothe mucous membranes. Take 1 dose of an Echinacea and Golden Seal combination remedy supplying 250 to 500 milligrams of Echinacea and 150 to 300 milligrams of Golden Seal 3 times daily for 5 days.

In a 1995 Israeli study, Elderberry extract was found to reduce both the severity of symptoms and the duration of flu (2 to 3 days in the treated group versus 6 days in the placebo group). Choose an Elderberry extract standardized to contain 5 percent total flavonoids and take 500 milligrams twice daily.

Garlic helps to detoxify the body. Take 500 milligrams (or 1 clove) 3 times a day for up to 5 days.

Ginger tea is excellent if the stomach if affected. Take a cup as needed.

Aromatherapy for Flu

Aromatherapy can also be helpful for the flu. Essential oils of basil, eucalyptus, peppermint and pine help to ease nasal congestion. Choose 1 to 3 of these oils and use them as inhalants or in steam inhalation treatments. For chest congestion, a steam inhalation treatment made with basil, pine, and / or tea tree oil can help to clear the mucus and ease breathing. Rubbing a massage oil prepared with these oils over the chest may also be helpful.

An aromatherapy bath prepared with elemi, myrrh, pine and / or tea tree oil can help to soothe that all-over achy feeling. Use a lukewarm bath for fever, a hot bath for chills.

Nutritional Supplements for Flu

Thymus glandular extracts, such as Choline, boosts immune function by increasing the number and activity of infection-fighting white blood cells. Take 250 to 500 milligrams twice a day. This is especially important for people over the age of 40, as thymus function declines with age.

Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to ease the course of a respiratory illness. Bioflavonoids have potent antiviral properties and can be useful at any stage of an infection. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams of each 5 times a day for 5 days to 1 week. Rose Hips are said to be an excellent source of Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids.

To help boost your immune system, take 5 to 10 milligrams of Zinc 5 times daily for five days to 1 week. Take Zinc to help with food to prevent stomach upset.

Flu Prevention Treatment

Begin treating the flu as soon as symptoms appear. Most people suffering through the flu naturally want to sleep and rest, sparing body energy to fight the virus. A comfortable bed and an open window bringing in fresh air (if weather permits) will help. Avoid being chilled, however.

Astragulus also helps to build the immune system, and thus makes you less vulnerable to the flu. Take 250 to 500 milligrams in the morning 3 times a week during the flu season. Note: Do NOT take this herb if you have a fever.

Siberian Ginseng helps to boost the immune system and strengthen the body. Take 200 milligrams 1 to ½ hour before breakfast once or twice a week during the winter months. Note: Do NOT use ginseng if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or hypoglycemia. If you are sensitive to the effects of caffeine and other stimulants, you may want to consult with a qualified herbalist before using ginseng.

Echinacea and Golden Seal stimulate the immune system and help keep the body clear of infections. Take 1 dose of an Echinacea and Golden Seal combination formula supplying 500 milligrams of Echinacea and 350 milligrams of Golden Seal twice weekly during the flu season.

Make it a rule to eat a low-sweet diet and no fried foods. During the flu season, prepare lots of vegetables and Astragulus soup to help boost your immune system.

People under stress may fall ill more easily. Both physical and emotional stress can create imbalances that make the body more vulnerable to illness. Learn relaxation techniques, and how to manage stress in a constructive manner. Avoid exposure to dust and chemicals, too much sugar and / or fat in the diet, and even sudden and extreme temperature changes.

Vitamin C and bioflavonoids, taken daily, help to prevent colds and flu. Take 300 milligrams of each daily during the cold season.

Dietary Guidelines for Flu

If you don’t feel like eating, it’s best not to force yourself. When you do feel hungry, choose easily digested foods such as juices, lemonade (hot or cold), herbal teas, applesauce, and lots of nourishing broth and homemade soups. Miso and chicken soup are good choices.

Getting plenty of fluids, including soups and congee, is particularly important. Fluids help to thin secretions, making it easier for the body to clear them, and also help to prevent constipation and flush toxins from the body.

Avoid dairy products, which have a tendency to increase and thicken mucus.
